Do I need a solicitor?

Do you really need a solicitor or can you handle your own legal matter?

In this digital age where information about most things is readily available, it may be tempting to save costs by trying to deal with a legal matter yourself without professional advice. However this is where it pays to remember the old adage, “A little knowledge is a dangerous thing”.

Information on the internet isn’t necessarily correct or up to date. Trying to handle a legal matter yourself is a false economy that can easily land you in hot water and end up costing you, and not just financially. The damage to relationships, your reputation or the goodwill of your business, may prove irreversible. It can be all too easy to place yourself in a vulnerable position whereby your legal rights are compromised. Taking legal advice to rectify a problem after the event is a bit like shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted; usually a case of damage limitation. There is no substitute for seeking the appropriate legal advice at the outset. Doing so can actually save you both time and money.

The law is complex and intricate. A professionally qualified, specialist solicitor can interpret the law and properly advise you as to your rights, how the law affects you and the protection the law can offer you. Part of a solicitor’s job is to spot issues only visible to the trained eye. Solicitors have to adhere to a professional code of conduct and are regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (“SRA”). They have to be qualified to practise and have to hold a practicing certificate from the SRA which is renewed yearly. Furthermore law firms have professional indemnity insurance so should anything go wrong you are protected. Seeking legal advice from a good solicitor can provide you with clear, objective advice and support which can be of vital assistance at some of the most important milestones in your life. Seeking professional advice not only helps to alleviate your stress at crucial times in your life, but it maximises the chances of a successful, fair outcome.

WSP Solicitors are experienced specialist solicitors who are Lexcel accredited. Individual solicitors may also be members of quality assured accreditation schemes.
