Employment Rights Bill – King’s Speech July 2024

  • Posted on

Now that we have a Labour government, all eyes were on what changes were going to be made to employment law. As outlined in the King’s Speech today  (17th July 2024), Labour are introducing an Employment Rights Bill.

Updates to the Employment Rights Bill.

  • Banning exploitative zero hours contracts;
  • Banning the practice of fire and re-hire;
  • Parental leave, sick pay and protection from unfair dismissal becoming day one rights. In relation to unfair dismissal, the day one right is subject to the probationary period;
  • Flexible working being the default from day one;
  • Making it unlawful to dismiss a woman who has had a baby for six months after her return;
  • Repealing the Strikes (Minimum Service Levels) Act.

We will keep a close eye on this new piece of legislation and will provide further updates once we know the details.
